Thompson, Edward Palmer
   b. 1924; d. 1993, Upper Wick, Worcestershire
   Historian
   E.P.Thompson was the leading Marxist social historian of the postwar period. Identified with the New Left, Thompson founded the New Reasoner and published numerous studies and essays. He is best known for his second book, The Making of the English Working Class (1963). The cultural emphasis of Thompson’s ‘history from below’ represented a paradigm shift in social and labour history, and was theoretically foundational for the practice of British cultural studies. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Thompson, increasingly involved with peace activism, was elected vice-president of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and founded European Nuclear Disarmament.
